TOP 15 THINGS TO TICK OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST THIS EASTER

Port Fairy visitors will be spoilt for choice this weekend with a range of Easter activities on offer.

1. PORT FAIRY EASTER FAIR

The Port Fairy Community House & Lions Club of Port Fairy-Belfast will hold its annual Easter Fair at Railway Place on Easter Saturday featuring market stalls, a car boot sale, book sale, Lions Barbecue, raffles, food vendors and crayfish spins. A great family day out in Port Fairy. The fair is on from 8am to 1pm at Railway Place and profits from the day will be donated to a worthy cause.

2. EXPLORE THE PORT FAIRY LIGHTHOUSE

Since 1859, the Griffiths Island Lighthouse that has faithfully guided ships into the security of Historic Port Fairy will be open for your viewing Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday 10:00am to 4:00pm. To get there, park at the Martins Point carpark, walk across the causeway to Griffiths Island and take the very scenic ten minute walk to the lighthouse.

3. TOWER HILL VOLCANO - YAMBUK ESTUARY GEOTOUR

Geotours will run a 3 hour tag along tour leaving at 2:30 pm from the Port Fairy & Region Visitor Information Centre, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday. You will visit the Tower Hill volcano then head west to the Crags and finally walk to the mouth of Yambuk Lake. Travelling with Mike Raetz a local geologist who will interpret the Pleistocene landscape with evidence of climate change over 300,000 years and major volcanic eruptions. We can take 4 people on board at $75 per head and people can tag along at $40 per car.

4. LEARN TO SURF & STAND UP PADDLE

Don't let the kids have all the fun! Learn to SUP (Stand up Paddleboard) with a 2hour beginner lesson and tour of the historic Moyne river, lighthouse and East Beach at Port Fairy. Bring your surfboard (or hire one) and paddle out in any of the Port Fairy surf beaches. Port Fairy Surf Schools rent surfboards, stand up paddleboards and wet suits to people in and out of classes.

5. LADY JULIA PERCY ISLAND (DEEN MAAR) SIGHTSEEING TOUR

Join Captain Barry Pender for a Sightseeing Tour onboard Southern Coast Charters Port Fairy to Lady Julia Percy Island (Dean Maar) Saturday 20 April 2019. This charter is a 3-4hr trip. Departing from Port Fairy, head towards Lady Julia Percy Island, viewing marine life and seabirds along the way. Once at Lady Julia Percy Island, spend up to an hour viewing the natural volcanic formation of the island, and observing the Australian Fur Seal in its natural environment.

6. FISHING CLINIC

Cast your rod on the mighty Moyne and learn from the Port Fairy Angling Club experts. Rods and bait supplied. Grab your little ones, drop a line and the rest will take care of itself.  Clinic will take place at Martins Point. A bad day fishing is still better than a good day at work!

7. ALL ABOARD THE MULLOKA

8. LIVE MUSIC SATURDAY NIGHT

Take pleasure in a good yarn with a local over a smooth Guinness on tap, while listening to local Musician Nick How singing the night away at Mickey Bourke’s Koroit Hotel, in which Irish favourites are a feature.

9. RETURN NEW WORKS ON PAPER BY GRAEME ALTMANN

Renowned artist Graeme Altmann brings his latest series of paintings to Wishart Gallery for his latest exhibition. Graeme Altmann was born in Warrnambool, where the wind and salt have carved out some of Victoria’s most spectacular coastline. It is the coast that continues to inspire his current series of exquisitely lyrical and painterly works such as, “on the jetty” and “crab nets & jellyfish”. Altmann has now established his own studio and gallery in Melbourne. 10. TOWER HILL GUIDED TOURS

A 90 minute interactive tour walk conducted by our experienced local guides provides and exclusive opportunity to explore the wildlife at Tower Hill and discover the natural habitat of some of Australia’s most iconic animals. Visitors will engage with guides and nature alike to gain an understanding of traditional Aboriginal lifestyles as well as learning how to identify native plants for food and medicinal purposes and throw a boomerang. 11. LOCAL SHIPWRECKS AT THE PORT FAIRY MUSEUM

Is it time you experienced the Port Fairy Museum’s latest exhibition, telling the story of the Port Fairy Shipwrecks through historic displays and photographs. Uncover the beauty and power of the shipwreck coast as you view an impressive and valuable collection of artefacts and hear local stories. In Port Fairy alone there have been around 29 shipwrecks in the sailing ship era. Many of these were small sailing vessels travelling between Tasmania and Port Fairy, while further east and around King Island a number of immigrant ships were wrecked some with a huge loss of life.

12. PAMELA IRVING & BENJAMIN LINDNER - BLARNEY BOOKS & ART

Join iconic Melbourne artist Pamela Irving and her husband, writer and criminal barrister, Benjamin Lindner Saturday evening at 7.30pm at Blarney Books & Art Port Fairy, as they discuss their shared project - revealing and exploring the origins of Australia’s “accidental anthem” Waltzing Matilda. Beer & wine available at bar prices.

13. DAY ON THE HILL

Day on the Hill, Flagstaff Hill’s annual Easter celebration in Warrnambool is back again in 2019 with a huge line-up of family fun. 14. YAMBUK LAKES

15. BUDJ BIM NATIONAL PARK

Imagine the powerful ancestral forces that created this rich cultural landscape. Stand on a crater rim to ogle scenic Lake Surprise. Pack a torch and pick your way through the darkness of a prehistoric tunnel cave. Explore an ancient lava canal and settle into the stillness and await the sights and sounds of parrots, honeyeaters, kookaburras, hawks or eagles.
